Using VR to play a survival game can be a thrilling experience. Here are some of the best games you can play.
Survival games are like a lot of other games that are better in VR because they make you feel like you’re really there. With a pair of VR goggles, picking up branches, rocks, and the rare dead animal can almost feel like picking up real things. There are also fewer things that can take your mind off your digital life-or-death adventure.
But, as with most VR games, there aren’t many survival games. VR remains quite a niche these days due to the steep hardware requirements. Still, some makers didn’t let that stop them from adding VR to their best survival games. Some of them were even brave enough to make their survival games work only with a VR headset. With these VR survival games, you’ll get a taste of the dirt and need.
CyubeVR
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2018 | SteamVR | NA |
Imagine Minecraft with graphics as good as Crysis. So, this is CyubeVR. It didn’t get a lot of attention, possibly because of the strange name, which may have hurt its marketing, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good survival game. It’s one of the best survival or virtual reality games on Steam.
Do keep in mind that cyubeVR is still in its Early Access phase, which means that everything you do could change. The game boasts that you can see almost everything, build anything you want, and even make low-resolution projects look like they are in 4K.
Star Shelter
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2017 | SteamVR | NA |
Star Shelter isn’t a VR game, just like Half-Life: Alyx wasn’t. It is a VR game. The people who made it took a chance and made it from scratch with VR in mind. Because of this, the game has parts and features that won’t work without VR headsets.
Star Shelter is a game about surviving in space. Anyone who has seen space movies like Gravity or something similar should be able to play it. You get to take care of a space station, but it’s not a relaxing job because you have to watch out for rocks, oxygen levels, and many other stressful things that keep billionaires from winning the space race.
SURV1V3
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2021 | SteamVR, Rift, PSVR | NA |
Have you ever wished that Left 4 Dead had a version that was more serious and had VR? Then SURV1V3 is more than just that. It’s a VR-only game where you can work with up to three other online players to stay alive in a zombie-infested world. It was also released later, which means that its graphics and gameplay are up to date.
SURV1V3 will both scare and satisfy when it comes to horror and the story. Because Left 4 Dead is more of an arcade game, SURV1V3 is marketed as a realistic game. The rules of physics are less flexible, so you can’t just wing it and make as many mistakes as you can and still have fun or win.
The Solus Project
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2016 | SteamVR, PSVR | 63 |
The Solus Project is similar to the other space games that were listed, but it came out before both of them. It’s a very well-known game that also uses the sci-fi horror with a psychological twist. It’s mostly marketed as an adventure game about exploring, but it also has survival aspects.
The Solus Project sees players as a chance for humanity to start over on another planet after Earth is killed for good. You play the part of one of the first people. Even though it doesn’t look like anyone lives there, one of the worlds you find is full of strange things.
No Man’s Sky
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2016 | SteamVR, PSVR, PSVR 2 | 72 |
No Man’s Sky is now more than worth it. This has been said before, but in case anyone is still not sure, here it is again. Since their release mistakes in 2016, the makers have come a long way. There has been so much added to the game that almost everyone can find something they like. Those with VR gear will find plenty to chew on here.
The switch to VR is worth it because the graphics are better and the game loop is smoother. No Man’s Sky also has game modes that make survival even harder, as well as a “never die” mode for those who like to explore the world on the edge.
Song In The Smoke
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2021 | SteamVR, Quest, PSVR | 79 |
Song in the Smoke isn’t unlike Valheim. It’s a survival game with simple images and cel shading. The real strength, though, is that Song in the Smoke can only be played in VR. The game was made only for VR, so it uses all of VR’s bells and whistles to their fullest.
So, the gameplay is built into the VR controls, and players need to be more aware of their surroundings because something in the corner of their eyes shouldn’t be ignored. Aside from that, it’s a pretty normal survival situation. You’ll have to make things you need, hunt animals, and just stay alive.
Into The Radius VR
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2020 | SteamVR, Quest 2 | 78 |
Do you want to play a game that is only for VR and is based on a popular series like Stalker? Then Into the Radius is the best of its kind. At first glance, this VR-only game looks like an update to Stalker. The main change is that the graphics are better, which makes sense since it’s a VR game.
In Into the Radius VR, you get to look around the Pechorsk Radius Zone, which is full of strange and mysterious physics. Don’t worry, you’ll be okay because you’ll have your beloved AK, a compass, and some food from the post-Soviet era.
Cosmodread
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2021 | SteamVR, Rift, Quest | 80 |
Cosmodread is a virtual reality game that should do a lot of things right. It’s only for VR, like Star Shelter, and it’s more scary than Star Shelter. It also has roguelike elements, which mean that if you fail or die, you have to start over from the beginning.
Cosmodread isn’t about keeping a ship in space, though. Instead, it’s about getting off a ship that’s sinking (or, in this case, falling apart). You have to find a way out of a spaceship that is slowly breaking down while looking for bits of resources so you don’t die in the process. It’s a great game, but I can see why some people might not want to play it because the VR part makes it too scary.
Fallout 4 VR
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2017 | SteamVR | 81 |
Fallout 4 came out without VR support, but it was a game that could use VR very well and was easy to fix. Fallout 4 isn’t just a survival game, to tell you the truth. It’s more of an RPG than a survival game, since the survival parts aren’t very well done. It does, however, have a survival mode and mods that make that type of gameplay more exciting.
Fallout 4 VR is a different game from Fallout 4, and you’ll have to buy it on its own to play it.
So, Fallout 4 VR is a good game for survival fans who want to try out the VR platform for the first time. It’s a good way to get used to playing in VR while also getting to see a post-apocalyptic Boston again, but this time with more realism.
The Forest
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2018 | SteamVR | 81 |
The Forest has been the talk of the town since 2018 if you want a full-fledged survival game. You play as a father looking for his son in a remote forest area after your plane crashes. It’s a creepy take on the idea of being a survivor.
Too bad there are a lot of freaks in the area, who may or may not have taken your son. The days are busy, and the nights are rough and dark. It’s a great setting for VR support because it makes the stress and horror level twice as high.
Green Hell VR
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2022 | SteamVR, Quest 2 | 82 |
Do you want to be deep in the bush and have to fight for your life? Greel Hell VR gives you that. It’s one of the most realistic and scary survival games you can play. You play as Jake Higgins, a researcher who has become lost in the Amazon. You have to deal with food, sickness, and injuries, as well as the risks of the environment and the wild animals that are out to get you.
The game Green Hell VR is different from the game Green Hell. People who already own the regular version of Green Hell will have to buy the VR version separately in order to play it.
Green Hell also doesn’t have any sci-fi or fantasy parts. Instead, it shows the Amazon jungle as a wild, uncontrolled ecosystem. Green Hell also has some of the best graphics and technical parts because it makes you feel like you’re in the Amazon rain forest in a way that other games couldn’t.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2020 | SteamVR, Quest 1-2, PSVR, PICO 4 | 83 |
Even though it’s not as open as most open-world survival games, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is not only one of the best VR survival games, but also one of the best VR games in general. You play as a tourist in a zombie-filled New Orleans, which is where Backrooms game is set. It has some of the best melee VR gameplay, which makes it a very exciting and interesting game.
There are still many ways to stay alive in this world. You have to keep track of your energy and eat often to keep up. When you’re hurt, you need to put bandages on. And to do any of those things, you need to explore a broken world and look for supplies.
Subnautica
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2018 | SteamVR, Meta Rift | 85 |
Along with The Forest, Subnautica is also one of the best-known survival games. Its main appeal is that it takes place in the water, giving players the chance and the setting to explore the huge oceans.
At first glance, Subnautica might look like an underwater tourism game, but there are risks to be found as you explore. In Subnautica, seeing a sea monster is one of the most exciting and scary things that can happen. When you add VR to that, it makes the dive even more interesting.
Minecraft VR
Release Date | VR Platforms | OpenCritic Score |
---|---|---|
2017 | Oculus, WMR, PSVR | 90 |
Many fans don’t know that this all-time great open-world survival game works with VR. With a free update on both the PC launcher and the PlayStation shop, the Bedrock Edition of the game can be played in VR right away. It lets you do everything in Minecraft, but you do it through a virtual reality mask. With the internal material, you can also play a large number of maps, adventures, and mods that have been made by the community.
The Minecraft Java Edition is not affected by this. Mods are the only way to play VR with that version.
The low-res style of Minecraft is great for the platform. Even low-end PCs and consoles can run the game cleanly and clearly because of this. There are a lot of ways to make the game easier to use, so you can find the way that works best for you.
