How to integrate a Human Machine Interface

You can adhere to these general steps to integrate a Human Machine Interface (HMI) with the Micro800 controller:

Select an HMI device:

Select an HMI system that works with the Micro800 controller. To connect to the controller, the HMI needs to support the required communication protocols. Popular choices come from Rockwell Automation and include PanelView Component HMI and PanelView 800 HMI. 

  • PanelView Component HMI: From Rockwell Automation, a cost-effective solution is the PanelView Component HMI. There are several screen sizes and features available, such as touch screen functionality and graphic display choices. The Micro800 controller can communicate with it via EtherNet/IP.
  • PanelView 800 HMI: An additional option from Rockwell Automation is the PanelView 800 HMI. It offers a small, reasonably priced solution with different screen sizes. EtherNet/IP and serial communication methods are supported by the PanelView 800 for establishing a connection with the Micro800 controller.
  • Maple Systems HMI: A variety of HMI gadgets are available from Maple Systems that work with the Micro800 controller. They offer various screen sizes, touch functionality, and networking choices like Ethernet and serial.

Connect the HMI to the controller:

Make that the HMI and Micro800 controller are physically connected. In order to do this, the HMI’s connection cables (such as Ethernet or serial) must be connected to the controller’s corresponding communication ports. 

  • Connect the cables: One end of the cable should be connected to the HMI device’s communication port, and the other end should be connected to the corresponding port on the Micro800 controller. Make sure the connections are encrypted.
  • Power on the devices: Turn on the Micro800 controller and the HMI device simultaneously. Make sure they are powered up and operating normally.

Configure the HMI:

To configure the HMI device, use the software that was provided by the HMI manufacturer. This could involve specifying the tags or variables that will be used to exchange data between the HMI and the controller, customising the panels and graphics, and setting up the connection parameters. 

  • Install the HMI software: The majority of HMI devices include software that must be installed on your PC. Follow the installation instructions and insert the software installation disc or download it from the manufacturer’s website.
  • Connect the HMI to your computer: Connect the HMI device to your computer using the proper communication wire (either Ethernet or USB). Make sure the connection is encrypted.

Launch the HMI software: Your computer’s HMI software should now be open. It could be linked to a specific programme name or icon.

Configure the Micro800 controller:

Set up the controller’s communication with the HMI in the Connected Components Workbench (CCW) programme. Typically, this entails setting the communication parameters, including the appropriate protocol, communication port, and address. 

Start your computer’s Connected Components Workbench (CCW) application.If there isn’t already a project, open it in CCW or start a new one.

Define tags or variables:

Define the tags or variables that will be utilised in the Micro800 controller programme to communicate with the HMI. These tags serve as a communication link between the controller and the HMI, enabling information transmission. 

  • Launch the Connected Components Workbench (CCW) application and choose your project.
  • Expand the “Controller Organiser” folder in the project tree view on the left to see the available controllers.
  • Find the “Programmes” folder by expanding the controller folder.
  • To enter the programming editor, double-click the programme where you wish to define the tags or variables.

Program the HMI:

To programme the graphical user interface and screens, use the HMI software. Make graphical components such as buttons, indicators, alarms, and other things that will let operators engage with the automation system. 

  • Link HMI elements to tags or variables: Connect the HMI elements to the tags or variables that the Micro800 controller has defined. As a result, the HMI may read from and write to the controller, enabling real-time monitoring and automation system control. Give each HMI element the proper tags or variables, such as

Establish communication:

Check the HMI and Micro800 controller’s communication. Make that the HMI can read from and write to the tags or variables on the controller. To confirm the communication, use the testing or simulation features of the HMI programme. 

To make sure the HMI device and the Micro800 controller are compatible and able to communicate with one another, configure the communication settings on each of them. Setting the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and communication protocol are typical steps in this process.

Integrate HMI actions in the controller program:

Create logic in the Micro800 controller programme that reacts to HMI inputs and initiates the necessary actions. As an illustration, pressing a button on the HMI could instruct the controller to start or stop a motor.

  • Launch the Connected Components Workbench (CCW) application and choose your project.
  • Locate and launch the programme where you want to include the HMI actions from the project tree view.
  • The HMI components or actions you want to integrate match to certain tags or variables in the Micro800 controller programme. For the controller programme to establish connection with the HMI, these tags should have been defined.

Test and refine:

Run the integrated system, check its operation, and make any necessary modifications to the controller programme logic or HMI panels.
