The Indian Premier League 2024 or the IPL 2024 will be the seventeenth edition of the competition. Ten teams will be fighting it out for the title in IPL 2024. Chennai Super Kings are the defending champions. The Chennai-based outfit beat Gujarat Titans in the final last year to win the title for a record-equaling fifth time. They will be eyeing to become the first team to win the title six times this year.

IPL: Brief history:

The IPL was founded by the BCCI in 2007 and the first edition of the competition was played in 2008. A total of 8 teams – Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers (now defunct), Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab), Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils), Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians – participated in the inaugural season.

Rajasthan Royals won the first IPL season by beating Chennai Super Kings in the final. Since 2008, the IPL is usually held in summer between March and May every year. It is the richest and the most successful cricket league in the world and is also widely regarded as one of the most watched and lucrative leagues across sports in the world.

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the most successful side in the history of the competition, having won the title five times. Apart from them, only Kolkata Knight Riders (2) have won the title more than once. The other teams to win the IPL so far are Rajasthan Royals, now defunct Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans.

A total of 10 teams will be participating in IPL 2024. Barring Delhi Capitals, all the franchises have their captains confirmed for the forthcoming season. As far as Delhi is concerned, Rishabh Pant is set to lead the team if he manages to return to action in IPL 2024.

However, the left-handed batsman is yet to start playing competitive cricket and it won’t be very surprising, if he misses the entire IPL or a good part of it. In his absence, Australia star David Warner is likely to lead the side. Last year, Warner was leading the team in Pant’s absence.

A number of franchises will also have new captain in charge of the team in IPL 2024. Mumbai Indians have appointed Hardik Pandya as their captain while Gujarat Titans will have Shubman Gill leading them. Shreyas Iyer will be leading Kolkata Knight Riders for the first time this season after missing the last season due to an injury.

The BCCI is yet to announce the IPL 2024 Schedule And  match timing. According to reports, the tournament is likely to be played from March 22 to May 26. The evening games are likely to start at 07:30 PM while the day games are set to begin at 03:30 PM.
