Conversation with Willa Brigham, the Mind Behind Odetta and the Pizza Tree

Willa Brigham is known for many things: her energy, her creativity, her inspiring spirit, and her remarkable talent for storytelling. As the two-time Emmy Award–winning host of Smart Start Kids, a Zora Neale Hurston Award recipient, and a celebrated performing artist, Willa has spent years bringing joy and wisdom to young audiences. Today, she sits down for a warm and lively conversation about her charming children’s book, Odetta and the Pizza Tree.

Q: Willa, what inspired you to write Odetta and the Pizza Tree?
A: Inspiration usually finds me in everyday moments, and this story was no different. I kept thinking about the magic of childhood, how a single seed, idea, or dream can grow into something extraordinary. I wanted to capture that feeling. The idea of a tree that grows pizza made me laugh, and I thought, “Why not?” From there, Odetta’s world came to life.

Q: The story begins with a mysterious seed from Odetta’s world-traveling grandfather. Why include that element?
A: I love the idea of storytelling running in families. Grandparents pass down wisdom, love, and sometimes a bit of mystery. The seed represents possibilities. It’s also a reminder to children that the world is big and full of wonders, and sometimes magic comes from the people who know us best.

Q: The book carries a strong message about sharing. Why was this theme important to you?
A: Sharing is one of the first big social lessons children learn, and it isn’t always easy. I wanted to show that sharing can be joyful, not just something kids are told to do. Odetta’s tree starts as her own special secret, but she discovers that sharing its delicious gifts actually brings more happiness. That’s a lesson children can carry throughout life.

Q: What do you hope young readers take away from this story?
A: I hope they walk away with a sense of wonder and a sense of kindness. I want them to believe in magic, creativity, and the power of giving. And honestly, I hope they laugh a little too. Stories should be fun!

Q: You’ve worked with children for many years through television and storytelling. How does writing children’s books compare?
A: Writing gives me the chance to create entire worlds on the page. Whether I’m hosting Smart Start Kids or performing on stage, I always aim to engage children. With books, that engagement lives on long after the story is told. With warmth, imagination, and just the right sprinkle of magic, Willa Brigham brings another delightful tale to young readers, reminding us all that sometimes the best lessons grow from the most unexpected seeds.
